The Arkansas River Trail System’s paved pathways offer an exhilarating experience for runners who prefer fresh air and natural surroundings to the monotony of an indoor treadmill.
Runners can sprint the towering Big Dam Bridge, the longest of its kind in the U.S. designed solely for foot and bike traffic, or tread past heavily forested parks, glistening green golf courses and expansive stretches of wilderness.
When it’s time for a break from Arkansas trail running, food and water are available at many trail-side restaurants and shops downtown or in the Riverdale area.
Mile markers span the length of the trail, allowing runners to keep track of the distance they’ve traveled on this Arkansas running route. In addition, multiple marathons, 5Ks and other Arkansas running events make their way along the trail each year, from the River Trail 15K to the Little Rock Marathon.
Don’t miss the Little Rock Marathon taking place March 2 and 3, 2012. This annual event features a 26.2 mile marathon run, 10K marathon run, 5K fun run/walk and a kids marathon. Click here to register for this event. Online registration will close at 11:59 PM CST February 22, 2013. If the race has NOT sold out, registration will resume at the Little Rock Marathon Health & Fitness Expo on March 1 & 2.
